Another one blank week in my blog as I was focused on my mid term exams.
One of my main courses is called "freshman" seminar. Yes, I'm a freshman, and this course uses only analog (film) cameras. My previous experience with film was "zero" so this is a fun class where I walk around NYC with my newly aquired film camera, Nikon FM3a, shoot rolls of black & white film, and then bring them to the school so I can develop and print them myself.
There is a magic moment in the darkroom when the black & white image comes up on the paper as I dip it into the developing agent. I've screwed up a few rolls, spent lots of weekends in the darkroom, but I'm learning some of the basic of beauty of photography.

暗室の中で、初めて見る、白黒のイメージがほんわりと紙の中に現れる瞬間。魔法の瞬間。数本のフィルムは失敗作、週末もしょっちゅう暗室で過ごしてますが、だんだん写真の基礎がわかってきました

To complete the NYC experience, I have taken our friends from Tokyo to Carolines stand-up comedy house on Broadway. Andy Dick was performing. I knew him from Aristocrats and also he had some trouble with law year ago but didn't expect to see an ankle brace (GPS unit for house arrest) used as a part of his story line... His son also performed at Carolines, joking about his father's misbehavior...

West of Manhattan above 57th Street, New York City and State are repurposing old and broken ferry terminal and “pier D” into a very nice park, Riverside Park.
Using rusted old steel frame from pier, and train/ferry terminal, this park creates an oasis in busy city with some SiFi movie scenes.

Friends from Tokyo wanted to enjoy a taste of jazz in NYC so we headed to iridium, a jazz place on Broadway.
It is not as famous, nor as fancy as Blue Note. It’s all about your music taste and who is playing, but iridium could provide a nice evening right at the center of Times Sq without paying too much.
Last night, the performance was done by Antonio Hart, Cindy Blackman, George Colligan and Eddie Gomez, playing music of Chick Corea.

At New York Subway 23rd Station
Tokyo is a busy city but its train system shuts down after midnight, then wakes up around 5 am. If you miss the last train, you keep drinking until next morning.
New York subway system operates 24 hours. It may not be as clean nor as reliable as Tokyo system but it reflects the character of true sleepless city.

BNE, I have seen this sticker in Tokyo too. But not sure what BNE means. Branch if Not Equal to zero? Not likely... Web search finds similar blog entry about people finding BNE sticker in Japan and worldwide, but unable to pin point the creator.

He kept staring at a the subway passenger in front of him.
First, he appeared as a creasy homeless person (as usual) but his hand created one of the most amazing portraits within 5 minutes of ride, entertaining all passengers around him, giving a piece of art in everyone’s mind. Then he gave the drawing to the passenger as he stood up to take off. They don’t know each other, I don’t know his name, but I may see him again on the “A” train.

All maps are drawn as if Manhattan Island is exactly aligned north-south but that is a convenience, not a true geography. Manhattan is about 30 degree off.
Twice a year, the sunset and sunrise exactly aligns with east-west street grids on Manhattan. This is called Manhattanhenge.
As I held my camera at the intersection of Madison and 34th Street around 8:15 on May 30th., the sun was casting its beam from New Jersey or Hudson River to all the way down to East River.

Went to another Broadway Show, “God of Carnage”.
Yet another emotional show, drama between two married couples, lots of laugh, great performance by Jeff Daniels, Hope Davids, Marcia Gay Harden, and James Gandolfini from “The Soprano”.

前回と同じく2つの夫婦を取り巻く感性豊かなストーリーで笑いまくり、出演はHBOのテレビ番組で有名な James Gandolfini、Macia Gay Harden、Hope Gay Harden、そしてすばらしい演技の Jeff Daniels

Went to see “August Osage County” with friends, great play, 5 Tony Awards, and great acting by Estelle Parsons.
A part of story was too real to me, reminded me my family, I was laughing and crying at the same time.
The Music Box theater interior is very nice too.
久しぶりにブロードウェイのショー、August Osage Countyを友達と、トニー賞を５つ受賞しただけあって、スゴクおすすめ、とくに母の役のEstelle Parsonsの演技は感動
ただ、あまりにも内容が自分の家族に似ていて、笑いながら涙が

日本の友達の日記を読んでたらむしょうにラーメンが食べたくなり、49th、７thとBroadwayの間の老舗、Sapporoへ
この店に初めて来たのは１９８５年の冬、アメリカに留学して6ヶ月目、ノースカロライナから友達と車でニューヨークを目指し
今も昔も変わらぬこのまずさ、塩辛い、麺のしゃきっとしない、チャーシューも中途半端な特製ラーメン
でも当時日本を離れて数ヶ月ぶりの日本食、よろこんで食べてた記憶が
I felt an urge to eat Ramen while reading a diary by my Japanese friend so I headed to “Sapporo”, on 49th St. between 7th Ave. and Broadway.
My first visit was back in winter of 1985, five months since I came to US as a collage student. My Japanese friends and I drove all the way from North Carolina to NYC to experience the City.
Lots of things changed since but Ramen here has not, soup is too salty, noodle is over cooked, and pork Chashu is greasy but no fravor...
But I was so happy to have my Ramen at Sapporo in NYC back then as it was my first decent Japanese meal in few month of living in US.
